Botox is becoming one of the more popular cosmetic surgeries throughout North America, and many other continents. Nearly 2 million Americans had Botox done on them around the year 2000, and this number has continued to increase since.

Why do people turn to Botox? Many women tend to resort to Botox in order to stop wrinkles. Without a doubt, the surgery is successful; but, like most cosmetic surgeries, Botox does have side effects that those considering it should be aware of.

So, how does Botox work? Botox works on a Toxin Type called Botulinum. This same toxin is responsible for causing food poisoning. Nonetheless, this “food poisoning” acts much different when used in small doses (for medical purposes). It contains a chemical called acetylcholine, which in turn stops messages going from ones brain to ones muscles. Since the electric messages from the brain are stopped, getting wrinkles is a lot less likely.

The practice of Botox was in the past primarily used in order to help fix spasms in the eye, though It was later used for cosmetic purposes. Since its first use for cosmetic purposes, its popularity has only continued to increase.

The procedure of Botox is quite simple. The patient is injected many times (inside their muscle), generally where the wrinkles appear, or are starting to appear. The precision of the injection is very important which is why a reputable professional is important for those considering Botox. Anesthetic cream is only used in certain cases, and when so, is applied to the area of the Botox injection. The Botox procedure does not take any more than half an hour (on average), though the results are not permanent. Botox results will usually last for half a year or so.

Botox is not seen as major of a surgery in comparison to other cosmetic procedures (for example, face lifting), yet it still does “the job”. Botox helps one look much younger by getting rid of the wrinkly look that comes with age.

Evidently, it does not completely get rid of every wrinkle line. Nonetheless, it does help, and tends to get rid of the bigger wrinkles and lines (for example, lines caused by frowning). Many people are not confident in their appearance due to wrinkles, and for those people, Botox might be just right. Consult your doctor or local Los Angeles plastic surgeon to find out if Botox is right for you, as some might suffer from the procedure.
